What are the common types of distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems?

Distributed PV systems refer to small-scale photovoltaic power stations. They are mainly constructed with PV structures installed on building surfaces or small open spaces near buildings. Owing to their advantages such as low investment cost, quick construction, adaptability to local conditions, and on-site utilization, they are gradually becoming the main form of photovoltaic power generation. Due to technical and policy factors including construction cycle, cost, and self-weight, steel structures are basically adopted as supports. This article will briefly compare and analyze several common steel structure types of distributed PV supports, providing references for the design of similar projects.

PV supports on concrete structure roofs Installed on the roofs of concrete structure buildings, they mainly use small steel structure supports built on concrete piers as the mounting supports for PV panels. The current technology is relatively mature, the structure type is simple, and there are standard design atlases. This type will not be elaborated on in this article.
Existing steel structure top PV supports: Installed on the roofs of single-story steel structure factories and large-scale breeding farms (usually simple steel shed buildings), there are mainly two construction types. For factories with good structural conditions, PV panels can be directly installed on the roof after appropriate reinforcement of the original structure. For factories with poor conditions and simple steel shed breeding farms, if PV panels are directly installed on the original steel structure roof, the cost of reinforcing the original structure will be high. Therefore, new steel structure supports can be built across the original structure, and PV panels can be installed on the newly built steel structure roof.
Newly-built PV supports on open spaces: Installed on small open spaces around buildings or in factory (yard) areas. Usually, owners have certain functional requirements for the open spaces where PV panels are installed. In addition to power generation on the top, the lower part can be used for warehousing, breeding, etc. Therefore, steel structure supports with a certain span and clear height are generally newly built for the installation of PV panels.
